Part of the Semana Santa (Holy week) celebrations in Calanda (Spain) was the ‘Romper la hora’. On Viernes Santo (Good Friday), at midday, in the sweaty Spanish sun, an estimated 3 thousand residents, dressed in purple robes, descend on the town plaza (or as close to it as they can get!) for the sole purpose of drumming.
As the church bells ring 12 to signify noon the drumming begins with full reverence and the deafening sound of budda-boom-boom, budda-boom-boom, budda-boom-boom-boom-BOOM !!
