Fishing in India is as old as the hills. No one has any real knowledge of when men first took to the seas for their food but one thing is certain, the techniques used have changed very little in the last thousand years or so – apart from the introduction of outboard motors on some of the larger boats.
Traditional methods use a vertical net, which has weights at the bottom and floats at the top. The net is set out at sea in a straight line before bringing the two ends together and the catch is hoisted out of the water.
