Indian Bikes

March 9th, 2012

Anyone who has been to India will no doubt have been fascinated by the bikes, there are millions upon millions all made to the same classic design and built to last. While I didn´t really head out and shoot a complete story on these bikes I do seem to have ended up with a fair few images on my phone that I thought I´d share with you.

Coming soon – A new site

March 5th, 2012

My eyes are hurting

I´m unsure if it´s withdrawal from not having looked through my viewfinder in over a week or the fact that I´ve been staring at a monitor for most of that week. I´m putting it down to the latter, I´ve been busy processing images and designing a spanking new website that will include include new images, new galleries and will generally be a vast improvement on my current site which is now about 3 years old.

Hopefully this will be ready to launch in the next week or so, but in the meantime here´s a preview of the front page

5D MKIII announced

March 2nd, 2012

Tom Bourdon | Documentary Travel Photography. The (worst kept) secret is out. Canon have a new full frame DSLR camera that was announced sometime before I woke up this morning, however we did see this one coming from far far away.

The 5D MKIII is an upgrade to the 5D MKII although it seems the 5D MKII (at least for the moment) remains in the Canon line up, which in my opinion is very good news as the new MKIII has absolutely nothing about it that gets me excited. There are no big headline grabbing features it seems more like Canon have just tweaked a little here and boosted a bit there but it seems to have no real big changes, which in a way is a good thing as the MKII is still an excellent piece of kit and I imagine I’ll be holding on to mine for some time.

One thing I do however really like about this release is the fact Canon have released sample images and movies so quickly. These samples show exactly what this camera is capable of.

Sample images and movies from the EOS 5D MKIII, including high ISO shots are here http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/samples/eos5dmk3/

Full details and specification from Canon can be found here http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_5D_Mark_III/

February 28th, 2012

It´s that time of the month again and how the months are flying by.

This months wallpaper is another shot from my time in the tribal regions of Northern India and shows what I believe to be a date palm leaf. The super strong lines and colours in this image simply meant I couldn´t walk passed with out shooting a couple of frames.

I´ve had a look at the my stats for this site and based on what Google Analytics has told me I´ve re-sized my wallpapers to better match those your screens, if I have missed out your size just drop me a comment and I´ll see what I can do for you.

A Travel Photographers backup plan

February 20th, 2012

There are no hard and fast rules regarding backup plans other than you must have one, no matter what your business involves if you have no way to backup your data you risk loosing everything. Back ups can be very simple and cheap. Online solutions from Dropbox and Sugarsync are free and offer several Gb´s of space, which can be perfect for all kinds of documents.

Unfortunately with the type of work I do online backups are really not an option, I often find myself far away from a decent internet connection, so it simply isn’t possible when I´m traveling and I need an alternative my current plan looks something like this.

I’ve become much more aware of backups over the last 8 months when I had 2 drives fail on me in less than 2 weeks causing me to loose thousands of images, fortunately a rather kind man was able to recover every single image, but believe me it wasn’t a nice feeling.

A funny moment from 2008

February 18th, 2012

Copyright Tom Bourdon | Documentary Travel Photography.

Now many of you will have seen images like the one above of the local fisherman who are known for their distinctive, and some what ingenious, rowing style. By standing on one leg and wrapping the other one around the oar they are able to propel the boat. This unique style came about as it gives the fisherman a greater view of his route and is able to better navigate through the thick reeds and floating plants that fill the lake. It also always one hand to be free which can be useful to smoke a cigarette, or wave at tourists.

Now normally I wouldn’t shoot any image that I knew would cause embarrassment, but there are moments in everyone’s life when funny things happen and to not take the photo at those moments would be a real waste. So what happened here well I was on a boat with a fisherman coming towards us, he was really showing off at well he had mastered the leg rowing and was playing up to the boat full of tourists  when his longyi (sarong like garment) slowly started slipping down. He grabbed the front of it with his spare hand and burst in to a fit of laughter and carried on rowing.
