TOMATINA

If Holi is the biggest paint fight in the world and Songkran the biggest water fight in the world then Tomatina has to be the biggest food fight in the world.

Every year on the last Wednesday of August the peaceful Spanish town of Buñol is invaded by up to 40,000 people their ammunition is 120 tonnes of over ripe tomatoes delivered by the truck load.

No one is sure of its exact origins but the festival was banned during the dictatorship of general Franco as it had no religious significance but was reintroduced after his death in the 1970′s, and has grown in popularity ever since.
