I have quite a comprehensive entry this year and I’m really happy with the prints I’ve made, I’ll share them with you next week when the deadline for the competition has closed.

Also coming up in the next few months is the deadline for the Wanderlust Photo of the Year competition, which is the largest travel photography competition in the UK and said to be second in the world to the TPOTY (but who am I to claim such things). This is the competition I won in 2007/08 and have high hopes again this year. For obvious reasons I want to, and will, send it my entry in the next week or so before leaving on the big trip. 9 days.

Wish me luck.

Oh, don’t forget you can still sign up for my newsletter, just fill in the form on the right,  first issue coming out in just 2 weeks.

Last chance to win

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Its amazing over the last week or so, I’ve been keeping an eye on my stats for this blog and I’ve noticed a big increase in numbers due to my competition :) Its just so few people to to want to leave a comment, or is it people are scared to share their opinion? If that’s the case then don’t be, its just your opinion, some of the work of the ‘photography greats’ in my opinion is……. well….. a bit naff – but that’s just my opinion, I’m sure you have one too.

There are no right or wrong answers to this comp and really I’m not such a scary guy to talk to, I’m quite friendly actually, honestly I am. Just ask my mum.

To those how have entered many thanks I was thinking I’d have to toss a coin to choose the winner but now its looking a little more complex.

Win a World press photo book

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Today I am offering one lucky reader the chance to win my own personal copy of the 2009 World press photo book.

If you don’t know about World press photo, its simply the biggest and most prestigious photography competition for working photojournalists in the world. This year there were nearly 100 000 photographers who entered from 124 different countries and there were 62 prize winners for various categories. One of the photographers that entered was none other than me, now I was not one of the lucky (if that’s the right word) 62 but just for entering the kind folk at World press photo supply a free copy of the year book to every entrant, that contains all the winning images from that year. Believe me this book will make you say ‘wow..’ many many times, some of the images in here are so moving and powerful that really make you wander about the lives we are leading.

So if you want to see the best photojournalism from 2009, this is the book.

If you want to see my entry this is the link Cyclone Nargis gallery. The images were shot just days after the horrific cyclone that hit Southern Burma in May 2008 killing over 130 000 people.

So how do I win ?

Simple. Just look through the galleries on my site (TomBourdon.co.uk) pick your favorite image and leave a comment to this post telling me which is your favorite image and why. I will randomly (using some extremely advanced mathematics) select a winner and post you this great book ABSOLUTELY FREE !!

Closing date is 30 June 2009 winner to be announced soon after (depending on how long the advanced mathematics formula takes ;) )

Good luck.

Festival, Fiesta & Celebration

Friday, April 17th, 2009

I’ve just checked my emails and was slightly suprised to see an email from Travel Photographer of the Year competition.

Well its that time of year again, and its come around so quickly, entries are open and the competition begins. Im particularity excited this year as one of the themes this year is, wait for it …….. ‘Festival, Fiesta & Celebration’ (I know I kinda gave it away in the title), now it could just be me but, I think this is spooky, if I was to suggest a theme that encapsulates what I shoot then ‘Festival, Fiesta & Celebration’ would be it, I mean they even use the Spanish word fiesta (for those who don’t know I live in Barcelona, Spain).

This competition was only launched in 2003 but quickly became one of the world’s most prestigious photographic competitions, you only have to look at last years winners (or any other year) just to see how strong the competition is. This wont be the first time I’ve entered this competition, infact it will be my third, but damn I’m going to working hard on this one. Its a print based competition (as opposed to an online comp), which I prefer as it give the photographer a lot more control over exactly what the judges will see. However the work involved is a lot more making prints and reprints after reprints with slight adjustments to get exactly the look and feel you want.

So third time lucky??

Well I’ll be up against several thousand other photographers but who knows? fingers crossed.

Why I didn’t win (perhaps)

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Last week I was talking about the World press photo competition, if you haven’t checked out the winners shame on you, I thought I’d share my entry with you and I’ve created a gallery of the seven images I entered in the ‘General news’ category you can find the images here. The images were shot just a few days after the cyclone in Burma last year.

I think one of my errors was the fact that the images are lacking in a story, its more a collection of similarly shot images. If you look at the images by Olivier Laban-Mattei here, of the same event, which won  3rd prize. There is much more of a sotry, different aspects of the lifes of the people and how they’ve been affected. I think its important to analysis my failures (not that me not winning is really a failure its a huge competition with nearly 100,000 photos !) it helps to prepare better images for next years competion and other simular comps.

And the winners are …….. not me

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Also in the last week 2 competitions have announced the winners the first was Wanderlust who announced that I can no longer claim to have the ‘Wanderlust professional travel photo of the year’, for those who don’t know I won this competition last year LINK , this year the winner goes to  HR Clayfield for his portfolio of railway life, the images can be seen here

The second competition to announce it’s winners this week were the most highly recarded photojournalistic competition ever. World  Press Photo the winners can be seen here and believe me there are (as always) some very powerful shots here. If you get the chance I strongly recomend going to see the exhibition if its soming to a town near you, its free so you’ve got no excuses. Details of the 2009 tour can be foud here

So no wins at all for me this year, never mind, try agiain next year.

World press photo deadline

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Today is the deadline for the World Press Photo competition, its been running for over 50 years and seeks out the best in photo journalism from the past year. My of entry, a series of images shot after cyclone Nargis, was sent off earlier this week – but I’m not expecting great things as the standard of work here is amazing.

If you’re not familiar with it, the winning images are taken on a tour and displayed at many major cities around the world, it’s well worth a visit.
