LA VIJANERA

La Vijanera takes place every year in a tiny town of Silió with less than 600 inhabitants. A colourful parade where locals dress up as various different male characters and dance and jump through the village streets. Each character has it’s own symbolism, but the real stars are the Zarramacos. Dressed in sheepskins and black pointy hats with their faces painted black to ward off evil spirits for the year ahead. Each Zarramaco carries several extremely large cow bells, the sound of which, forces out these evil spirits and protects the town for the year ahead.
